The Office for Cognitive Urbanism conceived a project for Manifesta 7 that addresses the incongruities of claims to a local as well as a regional identity and spatiality. Thinking about space implies to think about territories at the same time – territories related to cities, regions, nations or even continents. What they do have in common is that they are addressing the notion of properties and therefore evoking politics of inclusion and exclusion, an inside and an outside. Regarding the effects of globalisation, migration and a nomadic version of economies, these territories have to face demands from within and without. Manifesta 7 taking place in four cities and disseminated within the region Alto Adige/Trentino reflects these ambiguous and controversial politics of space.
The manifeSTATION project has chosen the railway station as a site representing an urban gate, an interconnection between the cities as well as larger spatial expansions. It is an inbetween place defined by arrivals and departures – also related to expectations, anticipations, the imaginary. Manifestation, an imaginary station within a station, addresses exactly those who willingly or unwillingly are identifying them- selves with this space inbetween. The Office for Cognitive Urbanism intervened with other architectural perspectives opening up spaces for different manifestations of cultural, political or economical incongruencies – reflected in the works by the invited artists. manifeSTATION marks a site – in and outside of the city, neither here not yet away.

manifeSTATION ist ein Projekt des Büro für kognitiven Urbanismus für die Manifesta 7, das nach den Inkongruenzen von lokalen wie regionalen Identitätsansprüchen und transnationalen Problemstellungen Ausschau hält. Als exemplarischer Ort wurde dafür der Bahnhof von Rovereto gewählt – ein Ort des Dazwischen inmitten der Stadt: Bahnhöfe fungieren als eine Art Schnittstelle zwischen Ankunft und Abfahrt. Man ist noch nicht ganz da und auch noch nicht wirklich fort. Diese ambivalente und prekäre Form der Lokalisierung ist symptomatisch nicht nur für Reisende, sondern für jedes Subjekt, das sich ob seiner kultureller, nationalen oder ökonomischen Situation inkongruent erfährt zum regionalen Lokalkolorit: MigrantInnen, Flüchtlinge, konfessionelle Differenzen, Fremdsprachigkeit, etc.
Das Büro für kognitiven Urbanismus hat vorgeschlagen, den Bahnhof in seiner Bedeutung als Anlaufstelle für diese prekären Anwesenheiten zu betonen und 7 KünstlerInnen eingeladen, dafür Beiträge zu entwickeln. Der Umbau des Bahnhofs repräsentiert ein Spektrum von Inanspruchnahmen, das gerade jene Menschen adressiert, für die Stadt und Region nur bedingt vorbereitet sind. In diesem Zwischenraum von Ankunft und Abfahrt existiert die Stadt vorerst nur als Name. Welche Bedeutung dieser Name dann für die Menschen bedeutet, die hier ankommen und abfahren, hängt davon, wie die Stadt auf die verschiedenen Anforderungen reagieren will. Als urbanes und regionales Symptom für diesen Zwischenort steht die manifeSTAtion, eine Mischung aus urbanistisch-künstlerischem Statement und imaginärem Bahnhof.
